I grew up outside New Haven, Connecticut. After Connecticut College, I tried theater for a year, then went to NYU Grad Film. I brushed past Ang Lee and Spike Lee in the halls, with the occasional Jim Jarmusch sighting. It was clear they were going places. I left after a year to become employee #20 at R/GA, then R/Greenberg Associates, a fantastic grad school of its own, where I learned how to be a professional. I then worked in Woody Allen's cutting room for a year as an assistant, which was both exciting and frustrating as the work itself was tedious. Missing the theater, I took a  playwriting class, and soon had a few productions. My wife, a child psychologist, and I moved to the Boston area when our first-born was two. I found a career home at WGBH, where I worked mostly as editor, but occasionally as producer-writer, for projects at Nova, and American Experience.. For many years, I balanced home life with TV work, theater, and teaching in the grad playwriting program at Brandeis University. For Powderhouse Productions, I created an early video website, Shoetube.tv.

Along the way, I picked up an MA degree from BU in dramatic writing. Later, I had  a year as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. As  a Hall Humanities fellow at the University of Kansas, I was able to catch up on some of  the post-mod critical thinking that took place after I'd left college.

 

In recent years, I've been grateful to be able to focus on writing and work as an independent scholar. I'm excited for the days to come and the projects ahead. As Joe Strummer of The Clash famously said, "The future is unwritten."
